DJ Mëw in an exclusive talk with Djanemag

It seams we can't get on the internet these days without seeing the name DJ Mëw pop up somewhere! Taking over the scene in diamond kitty cat ears this Djane proves she is a force to be reckoned with! Her cat-like persona sets her apart from the rest, but it's her high energy mixes that will have you coming back for more. 

In 2015 alone Mëw has toured the U.S., Canada, Jamaica and the Philippines - with a city count so large it's not even on record! Now that's a tour! She's headlined multiple nightclubs, spun luxury fashion shows, exclusive yacht parties, day pools and much more! You've seen her drop beats with DJ Whoo kid (50 cent official DJ) and perform at festivals with major artists such as Diplo, DJ Snake, Zeds Dead, Benny Benassi, Flosstradamus, Tchami, Tommy Trash and many more! 

Multiple magazines, including Maxim and Sports Illustrated, have taken notice of this beautifully talented Djane and now DjaneMag is here to give you the exclusive interview with her you can't find anywhere else! Mëw tells the story of how her name came to be, explains how she got her big break, and expresses the everyday struggle of being a female in the industry – All exclusive with DjaneMag! 

DjaneMag: Who came up with your nickname? What does it mean? 

DJ Mëw: You mean the name DJ Mëw? Haha. Well it's actually a pretty funny story. When I started booking more gigs a few years ago people started asking me what my DJ name was. I never had an answer because I didn't have one. I was just Djing all over the place as this no name DJ. One night at a bar my friends were asking me where I wanted to go next and I just gave them I high pitched meow, but it didn't sound like a meow it was more like a mew. My girlfriend looked at me and was like “Oh my Gawd! DJ Mew!!!” ...and that's how it came to be. :)

DjaneMag: Tell me please, how did you begin with music and Djing? 

DJ Mëw: I've actually been spinning “underground” for years. I was taught by some amazing DJ's here in Chicago. It wasn't until about a year ago that I nervously released my first public mix. People reacted really well to it. It got a ton of hits and Sports Illustrated even did a small feature on me and they linked my mix, which got it even more hits. It was amazing and totally un expected. It kind of jump-started my DJ career. 

DjaneMag: Do you travel a lot? What countries or cities do you like most of all and why? Do you like to play in your native country? 

DJ Mëw: I am very blessed to be able to travel in my career. Aside from making and spinning music, traveling and experiencing other cultures is a huge passion of mine. I'm from the U.S. so when I went to the Philippines it was like a whole other world. The people are so nice and the islands are just gorgeous! The water is so clear you can look into the ocean and see down for miles! I hope to go back soon. Canada is another country I'm in a lot. I feel like it's my second home haha. I actually just received my first residency there. Shout out to Orchid Nightclub haha! And of course I like to play in my native country! My heart will always be home in the US. 

DjaneMag: Do you think that the Dj world is men's a world? In your opinion is it harder for girl to become famous Dj? 

DJ Mëw: I'm asked this question a lot and I honestly have mixed opinions on it. I do think the “DJ world” is a men's world, but I also think it's quickly opening up to the many talented females who are displaying there craft. We're now seeing many females (including myself) taking over night clubs and spinning huge festivals – that wasn't happening just a few years ago and I think it's amazing! It's in no way 50/50 with the males but I'm confident as more females rise in the scene those numbers will come closer and closer together. As far as it being harder for a female to become famous? hmmmm... I'm not sure. I actually think it might be easier for a female to become famous as a DJ. It's intriguing to see a female behind the decks. I do think it's harder for a female to be taken seriously though. I definitely think we have to prove ourselves more than the males. 

DjaneMag: What challenges have you faced being a female DJ and how did you overcome them?

DJ Mëw: I would have to say my biggest challenge is people not taking me seriously. People are so quick to judge when they see a female behind the decks. I have people commenting all over my social media saying I “can't spin” or I'm “faking it”, but these same people have never seen me live or even listened to one of my mixes. It gets frustrating at times, but I just remind myself that I know what I do is real, and they people who come to my shows, they know and that's all that matters. 

DjaneMag: How do you spend your free time? 

DJ Mëw: Free time?! I'm supposed to have free time?! No one told me this!! haha.. no I do get free time every now and then. If I'm not in the studio or working on some type of music I love to go out and do things. Anything really. I just like to do things! Let's go to an amusement park, see a baseball game, go canoeing, go snorkeling, I don't care I just want to do it! I love new experiences. I've always said experiences are worth way more that physical items.  

DjaneMag: You look so great! Do you go in for sports? Give advice for readers how to keep fit. 

DJ Mëw: Anyone who knows me knows I hate working out. Like I have this passionate hatred for the gym haha. I do force myself to workout, but I'd much rather workout by just doing something physically active. Tennis is my favorite sport to play. It's fun and works every muscle in your body. I'm also a huge fan of swimming. I just love being in the water – I know a weird trait for cats ;)

DjaneMag: Could you describe your feelings when you play music? 

DJ Mëw: I feel like it's impossible to describe, but I'll try. It's that amazing feeling you get when you do something you love- and I mean really really love. Whether it's snowboarding, playing a video game, scuba diving or spinning music, no matter what it is, I think we all get the same feeling when we're in that moment. You just never want to stop. You could do it forever. 

DjaneMag: Can you share your dreams and plans for the future concerning Djing? What would you like to achieve? 

DJ Mëw: Well as many people know, I spun my first festival this year (The EverAfter Fest) in Toronto, Canada. It was an amazing first festival experience. The first time your on the opposite side of that stage, just wow. Words cannot describe it. I'm so excited that my team is working on more festivals! There are also tours in the works, some in countries I've never even visited before, with some amazing DJ's who I can't name just yet, but everything will come to light soon! What I'm most excited for is the release my first ever single in 2016! There you have it. I said it haha! Everyone's been asking if I had plans to produce my own music and yes! Of course I do! 2016 kittens! Get ready for it!
